The Metropolitan Police Department is the police force of the whole Tokyo metropolitan area. This department was founded in 1874 and since very time the head of police department is considered to be a superintendent general, appointed by the National Public Safety Commission and approved by the prime minister.
The Metropolitan Police is one of the biggest police departments all over the world, featuring the staff, consisting of more than 40,000 police officers and 2,500 civilian personnel.
The Metropolitan Police Department is set in the Kasumigaseki part of central Tokyo, and consists of several bureaus:
