Prefektura Tokio Japonsko Architecture and Streets

Architecture and Streets

When touching the point of Tokyo architecture, the first thing that should be done is taking into consideration the history of this city and the climate conditions it lies in. First of all, the city of Tokyo has endured two vast catastrophes: Great Canto Earthquake (1923) and the World War II. Both of them caused great devastations and distraction of the city, and, especially, its architecture, as almost two third of the buildings and edifices were totally destroyed.

One more thing or it will be more correctly to say, natural phenomenon – constant earthquakes have caused immense damages as well. So judging of these two facts, it is not surprisingly, that almost all of the architectural constructions are quite recent, to say modern ones.

What is more, Japanese do not attach much importance to the beatitude, elegance, or gorgeousness of their edifices, as since Japan is seismically active all the constructions are raised for a certain period of time, not very long at all. In order to anticipate distractions that can be caused by earthquakes if the buildings are old and unsteady, the Japanese destroy their buildings themselves, instead of renovating and refurbishing them, and create news ones, stable and safe.

The weather conditions of the city of Tokyo, though, open vast opportunities before the architects in terms of experimenting. Where else can they find such unrehearsed conditions?

What is for sure is that the city of Tokyo is a city of skyscrapers. In 2003 there were 47 towers over 150 meters high, and 28 among them less than 4 years old.

Among the recent constructions the “Sunshine 60 Tower”, built in 1999 is the second highest, featuring 240 metres. The highest one is Nishi-Shinjuku, built in 1991 and rises on 243 meters above the ground level.

So Tokyo streets boast in the variety of huge buildings, multistory edifices, and skyscrapers of the newest design.
